Small Orders, Big Relationships: Why I Won't Apologize for Buying One Thermo Fisher Thermometer

I coordinate urgent equipment requests for a living. A small order is not a favor. It's a test. If a supplier can't take a $300 order seriously, they don't deserve the $30,000 order that might come next. I've seen that pattern play out at least four times just this year.

The most frustrating part is how common this is. You'd think a written specification would prevent it. But suppliers interpret specifications differently, especially when they're trying to win a low-price bid. I know the counterargument. Small POs have admin costs. A $200 order doesn't pay for hours of technical support. I get it. But then be honest about it. Say 'our minimum is $500' or 'we charge a small-order fee.' Don't duck the question. Don't pretend to be a strategic partner and then ghost when the PO is under $250. In my experience, the companies that say 'small is fine' and mean it are the ones that retain customers.

Bottom Line

Three years ago, a startup bought a single Thermo Fisher thermometer from us. Last quarter, that same startup asked us to help spec a full Thermo Fisher supercritical fluid chromatography system. The relationship didn't grow because of the brand name. It grew because someone took the small order seriously from day one.

Whether you're buying your first thermometer or a complete SFC system, the supplier's job is to help you make the right call. Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means potential.
