An admin buyer shares when to use the Thermo Fisher catalogue for a water bath or microscope rental and when a specialist supplier is better for depth calipers and reading a Starrett micrometer.
I'm the office administrator for a 23-person contract testing lab. I manage roughly $260,000 in annual lab and office purchasing—maybe $265,000 depending on the year—across around 12 vendors. For the first few years, my purchasing philosophy was simple: one big catalogue solves everything.
