Thermo Fisher Purchasing FAQ: Spectrophotometers, Centrifuges, and the Questions Nobody Warns You About

When I took over purchasing in 2020, I assumed Thermo Fisher Scientific was the vendor you called when you needed a mass spec and a six-figure budget. Then I spent a week quoting a benchtop centrifuge and a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and realized I had the wrong mental model. Thermo Fisher is a big catalog, not just a last resort for elite labs.

This is the FAQ I wish I'd had then. I'm an office administrator for a ~200-person R&D and production facility. I handle maybe 60-80 orders a year—about $70,000 in lab and inspection equipment—across eight or nine vendors. I report to both operations and finance, so I have to make the purchase and justify it. I'm not a scientist, and I won't pretend to be one. I can tell you what the purchasing side looks like.

The Questions I Actually Get

Is Thermo Fisher only for high-end analytical instruments?

No. That was my initial misjudgment. Once I got access to their catalog, I found benchtop centrifuges, spectrophotometers, general lab consumables, and service plans. They do have heavy stuff—Raman microscopes, mass spectrometers—but they also have the everyday equipment labs use. If you ask me, don't self-reject because you're a small company.

What I recommend depends on your need. For routine UV-Vis, a Thermo Scientific Genesys or Evolution series instrument might be enough. For micro-volume nucleic acid quantification, the NanoDrop is the one our lab requests. I won't pretend to know which optical configuration is best for your assay. That's a conversation between your lead scientist and Thermo Fisher's applications team.

How do I pick between Thermo Fisher spectrophotometer models?

From an admin perspective, the conversation almost never starts with the model. It starts with three questions:

  1. What wavelengths and sample types?
  2. How many people use it, and who needs training?
  3. Does it need to comply with QA/QC documentation?

Then, and only then, do we look at price and lead time. In my experience, the cheapest model is fine for teaching or routine screening. The mid-range models with better software and validation options pay for themselves if you're in a regulated environment.

A Genesys versus an Evolution? I'm not an application specialist. But the model with more advanced software is not always worth the extra money. If your samples are standard and your team just needs a reliable reading, a simpler instrument is probably fine. If you're doing research and may need custom methods later, you might want the flexibility. Don't hold me to this, but in our last quote, the difference was significant enough that I asked for a demo before committing.

One thing I almost learned the hard way: not all UV-Vis models include the same cuvette holders. Check the accessories before you order, not after.

Are Thermo Fisher centrifuges worth the cost?

That's a loaded question. I'd rather say they're worth it when you need the rotor capacity, the safety certifications, or the service network. In our lab, we have a Thermo Scientific Sorvall floor model for high-volume runs and a Heraeus benchtop for quick spins. They're not the cheapest centrifuges we've bought. They're the ones that haven't caused a headache.

If your workflow is basic, a cheaper centrifuge might work. But check rotor compatibility, imbalance sensing, biosafety sealing, and whether the service center is within 200 miles. That last one matters more than you'd think.

One more thing: Thermo Fisher has a rental/leasing option for certain high-cost instruments. We rented a Raman microscope for a six-month project. It was expensive until I calculated what it cost to own the same thing for a two-year runway. If your funding is uncertain, renting might be smarter.

Why do I get "thermal camera for iPhone" results when I search "thermo"?

Because "thermo" sounds like thermal, and search engines like to help. Thermo Fisher Scientific (often typed as "thermo-fisher" with a hyphen) does not, as of March 2025, make a thermal camera for iPhone. That's a different product category for building inspections, HVAC, electrical panels, and so on.

I get this question because the name trips people up. If you're buying lab tools, you're in the right place. If you're looking for a phone thermal camera, you're looking for a different type of supplier. I can't recommend a specific brand, but I can tell you to check the resolution, temperature range, and emissivity settings before comparing prices.

Not ideal, but workable—that's what one engineer told me about a cheap model. The $50 one was better than nothing, but it didn't help us find the problem in the electrical room. That's a lesson from our maintenance team, not me.

What's a reasonable digital caliper price?

As of March 2025, our purchase records show between $25 and $60 for a basic 6-inch stainless steel digital caliper, depending on the accuracy class and whether it comes with a calibration certificate. If you need NIST-traceable calibration, budget closer to $100 or more. If you only need to check that a machined part isn't wildly out of spec, a $15 caliper might be fine. But I wouldn't trust cheap calipers for anything that goes into a customer product.

According to USPS Business Mail 101, a large envelope (flat) can't exceed 0.75 inches in thickness. A caliper in a 12×9×2-inch box won't fit, so you'll pay package rates.

That's why we bundle small-instrument orders instead of buying one at a time. Shipping is a hidden line item. I'm not a metrology specialist, so don't treat this as a calibration guide. If you need precision, ask for the spec sheet and the certificate before you pay.

Megger vs multimeter: can one tool do both?

No. I hear this from managers who want to save shelf space. A multimeter measures low-resistance continuity, voltage, and current. A megger—an insulation resistance tester—applies a much higher voltage and measures how much current leaks through insulation. They measure different things in different ways.

We keep both in our maintenance room. A multimeter for normal electrical checks. A megger for verifying motor winding insulation and cable integrity. If you're choosing between them, ask what the work requires. Do you need to pass an insulation resistance test? If yes, a megger isn't optional.

I learned this after asking our electrician if the $20 multimeter from the office was enough. He gave me a look that said everything. Exactly what I needed.

What should I check before ordering lab equipment online?

Three things, in this order:

  1. Specifications match the application, especially accessories.
  2. Lead time is written down somewhere, not just quoted over the phone.
  3. Invoicing and calibration certificates are ready before payment.

I skipped the calibration certificate check once. Just once. The instrument arrived, the audit team asked for proof of calibration, and I spent two days chasing a vendor that swore the cert was "included." It wasn't.

Per FTC Business Guidance on Advertising, claims like "calibrated" have to be substantiated with evidence.

We didn't have a formal rush order process at the time, either. That cost us a $90 handling fee and a lot of awkward questions. After five years of managing these relationships, I've come to believe the cheapest quote is usually the most expensive one once shipping, certs, and reorders are added. Now I use a simple checklist for every order over $500: product code, quantity, delivery date, calibration cert, PO number. It takes ten minutes.

When does renting a Thermo Fisher instrument make sense?

If you need a piece of equipment for less than a year—or if you're not sure a project will be extended—rental can be the honest best choice. We rented a Raman microscope because the timeline was uncertain and the purchase price was high. It was the right call on paper. In practice, it was also right because the vendor handled installation and training.

Renting doesn't make sense if you know you'll use the instrument for five years and you have the capital. It also doesn't make sense if your team can't get comfortable with the rental lifecycle. Ask about the rental term, service coverage, and whether upgrades are included. The answer changes the math.

No single manufacturer is the right answer for every lab. That's the honest part. But if you're in procurement, knowing which questions to ask is more useful than knowing which model to buy.
